Disney have announced this week that they plan to push forward with a Tower of Terror movie with John August (penned Big Fish and Frankenweenie) lined up to come up with the idea for the movie.

Those of you with great knowledge of the Disney Parks will know that this isn’t the first time that Disney have played around with turning the Tower of Terror into a movie.

In 1997 Disney released the television movie based on the attraction starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst. This was actually the first ever movie based on a theme park attraction released by Disney, it is also the only movie based on a Disney attraction to have aired over television with both The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean movies all getting theatrical releases.

As you can see from the cheesy trailer below, a lot of the movie was actually filmed on location at the attraction.

Those of you that love the attraction will know that the DVD is usually on the shelves at the gift shop after the Tower of Terror attraction. While it certainly isn’t going down as the best movie in the world, it is well worth a watch if you love the attraction and haven’t seen it before.

The real question about the new Tower of Terror movie is whether or not there will be a closer connection to the Twilight Zone television series or if Disney will try and distance itself from the show. I personally hope there is more of a connection as the Twilight Zone is an incredible television show that did a lot for present day Sci-FI.

According to Disney the film will have a bit more of a ‘Tim Burton’ feel to it and will be a family adventure similar to the likes of E.T. and The Goonies.

I think if Disney can get this one right it will be a fantastic movie and at this stage is one I am looking forward to.
