So although this isn’t strictly speaking a theme park related story, Disney Infinity has long since been a game that enabled players to bring some of the great monuments from Disney Parks to life in the game.

Also, speaking from a personal point of view, Disney Infinity is one of my favourite games in recent years and I am only missing a handful of characters!

In a bit of a strange move from Disney they have announced that after the release of the Alice Through The Looking Glass characters and Finding Dory playset that the studio will be losing down which will result in a loss of around 300 jobs.

Here is what Disney had to say:

By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.

Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.

So what’s next for Disney Infinity? We have two final retail releases coming, including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.

And as we turn to the next chapter in our story, I want to thank everyone who helped bring Disney Infinity to life, particularly Disney’s Glendale-based production and publishing teams, our external development partners, and of course the incredible Avalanche team for their tireless dedication to this project.

But most of all, I want to again thank you for making Disney Infinity a part of your lives—and for adding to the Disney legacy by being a part of this community.

While this all sounds very positive, in reality the reasons behind this move are likely a combination of the fact that these games are expensive to make, the competition is heating up and Disney have seen sales dry up a bit over the last few months (though I believe Disney Infinity is now the most popular toys to life video game ahead of Skylanders, Amiibo and Lego Dimensions).

This announcement also came off the back that Disney had not made as much money as they expected in their recent quarterly financial results. This is frustrating as Disney still made a heck of a lot of money and I really feel that Disney Infinity was finally finding its feet and had many years left in it.

Disney now plan on licensing out its games to developers in the same way that Star Wars was given to EA. Considering the success of the Star Wars Battlefront it does make sense in some respect it is just a great shame to see such a fantastic franchise cut short as well as seeing 250-300 talented people lose their jobs.
