Disney has already released Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella and Maleficent live action movies to box office success. In fact, Alice in Wonderland alone took over $1.02 billion worldwide alone.

Disney already recognised the success in these live action movies with a sequel to Alice in Wonderland in development as well as live action adaptations of Jungle Book, Dumbo and Beauty and the Beast all on the way. It would seem that Disney are continuing with this trend with two new announcements this past week.

Disney have announced that both Sword in the Stone and Aladdin will be next on the list for a live action outing.

Genies

The rumours right now are that the first Aladdin live action movie by Disney will actually be a prequel to the 1992 animated classic titled Genies. The movie will apparently track Aladdin’s Genie in his journey to how he ends up being trapped inside the lamp and inside the Cave of Wonders. It is expected that Disney (depending on the success of Genies) will then take the Genie’s journey to Aladdin and make a live action adaptation of the Aladdin story. It will be interesting to see how Disney handle the Genie without the input of Robin Williams, in my opinion it won’t quite be the same without him.

The Sword in the Stone

The Sword in the Stone is an interesting choice for a live action adaptation simply because it isn’t often regarded as a favourite among Disney fans. It’s still a fantastic film and it will be interesting to see how Disney take on the story of Merlin and Arthur in live action form. Rumours right now are that Game of Thrones writer Brian Cogman is writing the movie, leading to the question is Disney going to take a slightly more violent tone to the film?

So although part of me is excited about Disney announcing more movies, other than Alice in Wonderland I have not been overly impressed by the other takes on animated classics Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.
