Disney has confirmed in a recent earnings report what we all expected, a drop in attendance to its US theme parks over the last three months. The three month period ended on July 2 so we don’t quite get a full picture on Summer attendance but attendance is down 4% compared to last year.

Disney won’t be too concerned with this considering park revenue has increased 6% in the same time.

There are many reasons as to why attendance is down and revenue up but the primary reason for it I believe is simple, it is more expensive than ever to travel to Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Disney didn’t break down which parks (Disneyland or Walt Disney World) lost out more on attendance but I suspect the majority is in Orlando. This comes following the alligator attacks, the Pulse Nightclub shootings as well as the threat of the Zika virus in Florida. Changes in ticket structure and increases in pricing are also likely to be playing a huge part here.

When you look at the UK specifically, the Pound is at almost an all time low against the Dollar thanks to Brexit and this is no doubt also having an impact on how many visitors are and will be heading to Walt Disney World in the coming months.

Unfortunately for me (I am travelling to WDW in October), all of this is likely to mean a busier September/October for the parks.

What do you think of the drop in attendance?
